Quick buttermilk rolls

4-4 1/2 cups flour, divided
2    pkgs. dry yeast
3    tsbp. sugar
1    tsp. salt
1/2  tsp. soda
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
1/2  cup water
1/2  cup shortening

     Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, yeast, sugar, salt
and soda in a large bowl and mix well.
Combine buttermilk, water and shortening
in a small saucepan.  Place over low heat
until warm.  Gradually add milk mixture to
dry ingredients, mixing at low speed for 3
minutes, and 2 minutes at medium speed.  Stir
in remaining flour.  Turn dough out onto a
lightly floured surface and knead until
smooth and elastic.  Place dough in a greased
bowl, turning to grease the top.  Cover and
let rise in a warm place until double in
bulk.  Punch down and shape into 1 1/2 inch
balls.  Place balls on a greased jelly roll pan
or cookie sheet.  Let rise in a warm place
until double in bulk.  Bake at 400 for 18-20
minutes.  Makes 2 dozen.
